FAQ
How to calculate the value of machinery?
Machinery value is calculated by selecting the right valuation approach for the asset and its intended purpose, then applying current market data or depreciation analysis to arrive at a defensible number.
Professional appraisers follow three recognized approaches, and the most credible valuations consider all three before determining which applies:
The three approaches to value
Certified machinery appraisers use the following methods:
- Market (Sales Comparison) Approach: The appraiser identifies recent sales of comparable equipment, then adjusts for differences in age, condition, hours of use, configuration, and geography to derive an indicated value. This approach works best for widely traded assets such as forklifts, common CNC machines, and construction equipment with active secondary markets.
- Cost Approach: The appraiser estimates the current replacement cost of an equivalent machine, then deducts physical deterioration, functional obsolescence, and economic obsolescence. The simplified formula is: Replacement Cost New minus all accumulated depreciation equals current value.
- Income Approach: Used when a machine or production line generates clearly identifiable cash flows. The appraiser discounts projected earnings back to a present value. This approach is less common for individual pieces of equipment and more applicable to dedicated production systems.
Before any calculation begins, the appraiser documents the asset fully, including make, model, serial number, year of manufacture, capacity, usage history, and maintenance records. The intended purpose of the appraisal (insurance, tax, financing, litigation) also determines which standard of value applies, such as fair market value, orderly liquidation value, or replacement cost.
Because these calculations require access to auction databases, market comparables, and industry-specific knowledge, most lenders, courts, and the IRS require a formal report prepared in accordance with USPAP. Our team at Machinery & Equipment Appraisal Experts delivers USPAP-compliant valuations across hundreds of equipment categories. Request an Appraisal to get started.
