FAQ
How to find the fair market value of equipment?
Finding the fair market value (FMV) of equipment requires identifying comparable market sales, assessing the asset's condition, and applying one or more of the three standard valuation approaches recognized under USPAP: the market (sales comparison) approach, the cost approach, and the income approach.
The market approach is typically the most direct path to FMV. It involves researching verified auction results, dealer trades, and sales databases for comparable equipment matched by make, model, age, hours, and configuration. Those comparables are then adjusted for differences in condition, remaining useful life, attachments, and location to arrive at an indicated value for the subject asset.
The cost approach estimates what it would cost to replace the equipment with a comparable substitute, then applies deductions for physical deterioration, functional obsolescence (such as outdated controls), and economic obsolescence (such as a decline in demand for that equipment type). This method carries the most weight when strong sales comparables are scarce, as with highly specialized or custom machinery.
The income approach is used less frequently for individual equipment but applies when a specific asset's contribution to revenue can be isolated, such as through a discounted cash flow of net earnings attributable to that machine.
In practice, FMV conclusions are most defensible when a credentialed appraiser collects detailed asset data (make, model, serial number, hours, maintenance history, and condition), applies the most appropriate approach or a reconciliation of multiple approaches, and documents the methodology in a USPAP-compliant report. Our appraisers hold credentials with leading organizations such as the ASA, NEBB, and CAGA, and every report we prepare is prepared in accordance with USPAP.
